DetailsDay tour from Yerevan
Lake Sevan lies at about 1,900 metres and is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in the world. We drive along its western shore, where the Armenian gull nests on Gull Island, a protected area of Sevan National Park.
Hayravank, a monastery of the 9th–12th centuries, stands right above the water. In Noratus is the largest surviving field of khachkars — about a thousand cross-stones from the 10th to the 18th century. We end the day at Sevanavank on the Sevan peninsula, which was an island until the lake level dropped by about 20 metres in the 20th century.
Gull Island is a nature reserve: visitors don’t land on it, we watch the birds from the shore. Even in summer it is much cooler at Sevan than in Yerevan — bring a light jacket.
