Day tour from Yerevan

Khor Virap, Areni & Noravank

Noravank monastery among red cliffs

Overview

Khor Virap stands right by the border, and from its hill Mount Ararat feels close enough to touch. This is where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned before Armenia became the first country to adopt Christianity as its state religion.

Further south the road climbs into Vayots Dzor. We stop in Areni, a village famous for its wine, and continue to Noravank — a 13th-century monastery in a canyon of red cliffs, with a striking two-storey church.

Good to know

In a cave near Areni, archaeologists found the oldest known winery in the world — about 6,000 years old. We can add a stop there.
